HEAVY machinery moved on to the site of Trafford Town Hall on Monday to begin demolition of the 1980s built extention.

To mark the occasion Trafford Council leader, Matt Colledge, visited the site to see the work get underway.

Donning a hard hat, he welcomed a huge crunching machine to the site which literally eats the building.

“The plans for the Town Hall are hugely exciting,” he said. “This project gives us an opportunity to open up one of the borough’s most iconic buildings so that the community and not just the council can use and benefit from the space.

“It is with great joy that I can see we are now one step closer to completing this crucial project.”

The main 1931 built town hall structure will remain under the plans with a new build at the rear. It is expected to be complete by early 2013.
