AN ARTIST who was moved by the impact a dog attack had on its owners has created a lasting tribute that is up on the walls at Leigh Turnpike Gallery.

Last summer, 18-year-old dog owner Abi Cunliffe was horrified when her beloved Shi Apso, Ollie, was attacked while walking with her mum to her grandparent's house in Leigh.

A large dog was said to have snuck through a garden fence and set its jaws on the terrified Ollie, and left him with such injuries that his eye had to be removed by vets.

Despite his injuries, Ollie went on to make a full recovery and the community of Leigh rallied around Abi on social media, offering their condolences and support.

A pet owner's worst nightmare, the story caught the attention of local artist Lisa Michelle, who is based in Creative Spin Studios at Leigh Spinners Mill.

Particularly moved by the story and the impact it had on the family, Lisa wanted to create a special portrait of Ollie as a lasting legacy of his bravery, strength, and beauty.

With Leigh Turnpike advertising its 'OPEN exhibition' and calling for local artists' submissions, Lisa felt this was a perfect place to highlight Ollie and Abi's story; with a reminder to other owners of the impact that dog attacks can have.

The portrait, entitled “Ollie’s Bravery Award,” will then be donated to Abi once the exhibition ends later this month, as an act of kindness to the young dog owner and her family.

Lisa, an artist, educator and illustrator, said: “I felt so sorry for Abi and her family and wanted to do something nice to cheer them up.

“Creating this portrait of Ollie was my way of expressing my support and showing them that they are not alone in their experience.”

Abi, her grandma Rhona, and Ollie himself were invited to attend the launch of the exhibition at the Turnpike, which allowed isa to finally meet the recipient of their kindness in person.

The OPEN exhibition at the Turnpike Gallery runs until March 18th, offering the public a unique opportunity to view local artworks and support Ollie and Abi’s story.
