VOLUNTEERS are needed to support patients and services at the Royal Albert Edward Infirmary.

Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust, which runs the borough's hospitals, is looking to recruit patient companion volunteers to help out on the hospital's wards.

Andrea Arkwright, head of patient and public engagement at the trust, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity to help support your local hospital.

“You can make a real difference by being a listening ear to patients and providing companionship during their stay in hospital.”

The trust also wants more volunteers for the help desks at the Royal Albert Edward Infirmary, Boston House and the Thomas Linacre Outpatient Centre.

Andrea added: “Our hospital help desks typically deal with more than 180,000 enquiries per year, so this volunteer role is vital for supporting our patients.

“Volunteering is a two-way process. The trust gains an integral member of the family who enhances and complements the work of our staff and our volunteers come from all walks of life and represent the diversity of the community we serve.”
