Millions of Coronation Street viewers tuned in to see Amy James-Kelly bow out of the soap as the latest victim of last week’s explosion.
Her character, Sophie Webster’s girlfriend Maddie Heath, died as a result of her injuries taking her knowledge of Jenny Bradley’s kidnap plot to her grave.
The explosion also killed off actor Jimi Mistry’s character, Kal Nazir, 18 months after he first joined the show.
His character was caught up in the fire drama at Victoria Court flats, where he failed to escape the inferno after waving brand-new fiancee Leanne (Jane Danson) off to safety shortly before a gas canister next to him exploded in the blaze.
The fire is just the latest disaster to strike the street – it marked its 50th anniversary with a tram crash that left several characters dead and also led to a wedding and the premature arrival of a baby.
