THE funeral of former Leigh RLFC player-coach and Great Britain international hooker Joe Egan took place on Tuesday afternoon at St Patrick’s RC Church, Wigan.
Egan, who was 93, left his home town club of Wigan to sign for Leigh for a record £5,000 fee in 1950 and left Hilton Park in 1956.
Mourners at St Patrick’s included Wigan Council Leader Lord Peter Smith, Wigan coach Shaun Wane, renowned players including Billy Boston, Bernard McGurrin, Colin Clarke, Jackie Edwards, Andy Gregory, Widnes quartet Frank Myler, Jim Mills, Bob Chisnall and Ged Smith, Wigan Warriors chief Ian Lenagan and Leigh and Great Britain international Mick Martyn who signed for Leigh during Egan’s era as coach. On behalf of Leigh RLFC Past Players Association Mick made a donation to Dementia UK.
