EIGHT hundred scooter riders descended on the Royal Manchester Children's Hospital on Saturday putting smiles on the faces of young patients when they arrived with their cargo of Easter eggs.

Leigh scooter enthusiast Kevin 'Ginger' Lawton has been masterminding his annual Ginger's Egg Run for 27 years and the event has gone on to become one of the biggest in the scooterists' calendar.

"I'm not sure how many eggs we donated but we filled eight or nine of those giant lorry transport cages with them," said Ginger after the Friday and Saturday event based at the Rose Centre, Lowton Civic Hall.

On Friday night around 100 people gathered for food and music at the hall and the following day a staggered convoy of machines headed-out of Hesketh Meadow Lane for the hospital.

"We had patients and nurses judging the custom bikes on show in the hospital grounds," said Ginger.

"The kids sat on scooters and had a great time. And I'd like to thank the people of Lowton for being understanding and apologise for any inconvenience we might have caused."

Best in Show prize went to a 225cc Lambretta Chopper. Many of the machines that took part in the egg run were classic Lambrettas and Vespas, but entries also included Honda step-thru' 50s and 90s, a Heinkel and the oldest machine, a 1950 Lambretta LD150 belonging to Bolton Spartans scooter club member Barry Smith.
