UNWANTED garments have been transformed into Victorian fashion by talented students.

Second years at Wigan and Leigh College have used the discarded items to create shirts inspired by the late Victorian / early Edwardian era.

Now their work is to be displayed at the Wigan School for the Arts on the main college site for five weeks.

“The students are really excited that their shirt fashion line is going on display at the college,” said course leader Dawn Cunningham.

“A lot of hard work went into the process behind their creations and it is great to be able to showcase the background to the finished garments.”

Wigan and Leigh Hospice donated the shirts to the college because they were not in good enough condition to be sold in their charity shops.

It is hoped the project will inspire more young people to re-use unwanted clothing and even visit more charity shops The exhibition will also include the design boards created by students to outline the background work that went into their production.

After the exhibition has finished at the college, it will go on display at the hospice’s charity shops.

“It has been a very valuable project for our students and it has been great to be able to work with Wigan and Leigh Hospice,” said Dawn.
