PUPILS from an Atherton primary school took centre stage to welcome the Tongan rugby league team to the borough.

Members from St George’s Primary School choir attended a civic reception for the team that will be training at Leigh Sports Village throughout the Rugby League World Cup 2013.

The 25 pupils hoped to inspire the team to succeed with their song Believe and also read poems to the guests which included local dignitries and representatives from Leigh Centurions.

Sue Kennedy, the school business manager, said: “We chose the song to inspire the Tongan team to believe in themselves and do well in the World Cup.”

The reception was held at Wigan Town Hall last night, Tuesday, ahead of the World Cup opening cerermony on Saturday in Cardiff.

Clr Phyllis Cullen, Deputy Mayor of Wigan Borough, said: “We’re thrilled the team have chosen to be based in Leigh for the duration of the tournament. I’m sure they will be delighted with the facilities at their disposal at Leigh Sports Village.”

The pupils will also be attending the Tongan’s meeting with the Cook Islands in Leigh on November 5.
