RESIDENTS are being given the opportunity to comment on proposals that will see developers contribute to new building developments in the borough.

New legislation requires developers to help fund new or improved infrastructure needed as a result of development and Wigan Council is consulting on the proposed charges that developers would be required to pay.

The council is preparing a Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) charging schedule which will vary depending on the size, type of use and location of the development.

Deputy leader of Wigan Council Clr David Molyneux said: “Our communities need to be assured that appropriate infrastructure will be put in place when development happens.

"But we also have to recognise that we must strike the right balance between the need to fund infrastructure and promote investment in the local economy.”

The documents are available online at: www.wigan.gov.uk/communityinfrastructurelevy. They are also available to view at all public libraries during normal opening hours.

The consultation runs until April 15.
