On your marks for second Leigh Games
Updated 9:57am Wednesday 25th June 2014 in News
PRIMARY schools are preparing for the biggest sporting event of the year.
The return of the Leigh Games for its second year will see pupils from Leigh, Tyldesley, Atherton, Lowton and Golborne compete for the coveted gold, silver and bronze medals in each activity.
The Leigh Journal is once again the official media partner for the event, which will be held at Leigh Sports Village on June 5, and WLCT is lending its support by providing facilities at Leigh Indoor Sports Centre for free.
The day will begin with an opening ceremony and participating schools have been asked to bring flags or banners to represent their school to recreate the spirit of the London Olympics, which inspired the inaugural games last year.
Leigh MP Andy Burnham, who opened last year’s games, said: “Last year’s games were such a success and the feedback was great – it shows how much demand there is and how pleased people were with it.
“It is so important to keep the momentum of the Olympics going. It keeps the schools involved in the clubs and it is a showcase for all that we are doing. It will be another great summer of sport too with the football World Cup.”
Sporting VIPs and club mascots have been invited to the day, which will feature a variety of events such as swimming, football and cheerleading.
The day will finish with a mascot race on the track and an Olympic-style medal presentation.
