LANGUAGE students have been raising money for a dementia cafe.

Students from Bolton College have raised £235 for Dementia Buddy’s Guardian Angel project which was born out of discussions at the charity’s monthly dementia cafe at Atherton Library.

Through funds raised for the Good Deeds Trust, the charity aims to provide wrist bands, bag tags, badges and key rings to people suffering from dementia so they can be identified if they become confused and lost.

Margarita Concannon, who is head of Foreign Languages at Bolton College said, “I went to visit the dementia café in Atherton Library after hearing about it from attendees on my course.

“When I saw Dementia Buddy’s Guardian Angel devices in operation I just wanted to help.”

The students held a raffle at their Christmas party to donate to the project.

Cllr Mark Aldred, from the Good Deeds Trust, said: “Everyone we show the Guardian Angel devices to, are amazed and overwhelmed by the security, and peace of mind it could give to someone living with dementia and their carer.

“We have only produced these devices because people at our dementia cafes feel that they would be an essential device to have.

“We are hoping the devices will be ready for launch at the end of February, so if you can display a poster to make people aware then please give us a call.”

The devices were created after carers said their greatest fear was their loved ones forgetting where they live or where they are and would welcome something that helped people realise what had happened and help them find their way home.

Karen Aldred said “We brought these out for people living with Dementia but have quickly realised that lots more people can benefit.

“We have had schools wanting them for when they take pupils on trips, Health professionals for patients who have not fully recovered but still want to go out, as well as Cycle clubs so they can give one to all their cyclists in case they get in difficulty.
