A FURTHER warning about high levels of demand at Wigan Infirmary A&E has been released by the hospital trust.

Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Trust is urging the public not to visit the service unless they have been involved in an accident or it is a life threatening emergency.

Mary Fleming, Acting Director of Operations said ‘The A&E department at Wigan Infirmary is extremely busy and we are anticipating this continuing into the weekend. "Everyone will benefit if we can give urgent and emergency care to the people most in need.

"We are therefore appealing to the public to think twice and make sure they choose the right service for minor illnesses, ailments and injuries.

"The public should only attend A&E if they have a serious health condition or in a genuine emergency.”

Health agencies throughout the borough are currently dealing with rise in demands.

Alternative healthcare options such as making a GP appointment, self-mediating where appropriate and walk-in-centres have been advised instead of attending A&E.

GP or nurse appointments can be booked until 8pm weekdays and between 10am and 4pm at the weekend.

Registered Wigan Borough patients can call 01942 482848 and book an appointment. For non-emergency medical help outside of GP opening hours, contact 01942 829911.
