AN investigation is under way after an armed robber brandishing a gun threatened staff at a Leigh shop.

The offender entered the IB Local on Wigan Road, at 6pm on Friday, October 7 and pointed the gun at staff before demanding cash.

But he left the shop after staff, who triggered a silent alarm, refused to hand over cash.

The offender, who was wearing a hooded top covering his face, ran off in the direction of the Royal Oak pub.

Detective Sergeant Neil Lawless, from Greater Manchester Police, said: “This was a cowardly crime and resulted in a terrifying ordeal that no employee should ever have to go through.

“I would like to praise the staff for their quick thinking in raising the silent alarm and standing firm in frightening circumstances.

“We are appealing to anyone with information to get in touch and help us bring this criminal to justice.”

Anyone with information should contact police on 101 quoting reference number 1804.
