PETER Kane Square should be a colourful place to be next spring thanks to the Golborne in Bloom group.
Members have braved the cold weather to plant a range of bulbs there and are now planning to grow free food for residents.
Golborne in Bloom spokesman Ian Massey said: "We want to plant fruit trees and bushes in various publicly accessible patches of land so that people can have free, fresh fruit in late summer and autumn.
"We eventually hope to grow many other free, edible products.
"The idea of ‘food for free’ is not a new one, but it is a good one in the present climate of low wages and food banks.
"It was a new idea when former Leigh resident Pam Warhurst teamed up with Joanna Dobson in the town of Todmorden in West Yorkshire in 20087 to start the Incredible Edible Network.
"The group now grows free food everywhere in their towns and this is what Golborne in Bloom plans to do.
"It won’t happen overnight but with the help of a few volunteers and some Wigan Council funding to buy plants and seeds, we are hoping to go from strength to strength."
