A GRAPHIC designer has been decorating his beard in weird and wonderful festive ways in the name of charity, with Christmas lights, baubles and chocolate Roses all adorning his facial fuzz.

Michael Griffiths has turned a few heads having commuted to work on the train throughout December wearing his beard in different Christmassy styles every day.

In addition to adorning his facial hair with Christmas lights, 60 baubles and a tin of chocolate Roses, his beard has also boasted mistletoe, glittery stripes, lametta tinsel, poinsettias and a googly-eyed Rudolf design.

The 36-year-old has been creating the eye-catching designs as part of Decembeard, which aims to raise awareness and funds to fight bowel cancer.

He said: “You get everything from people not looking at you because they don’t want to talk to the crazy guy with the stuff in his beard to people talking to you as if there is nothing different about you and people coming over asking if they can take pictures with you.

“That’s great as although it is about raising money it is also about raising awareness, so you get to talk to people about it.

“One morning I had a woman on the train who looked like she was going to wet herself but she did not say a word to me.

“My workmates all love it, apart from when I have got the glitter in because it gets everywhere – one of the lads is a bit of a neat freak so I kept standing next to his desk and letting it fall.

“I have also had a couple of conference calls with a client in Boston when I have had stuff stuck in my beard, which was quite funny.”

Michael, who lives in Golborne, took part in the festive beard challenge every working day in December last year, and although he has confined his creativity to the 12 Days of Bearded Christmas this time around the volume of decorations in his facial hair has been cranked up a notch.

His designs can take up to two hours of preparation work, while Michael also walks two miles from Golborne to Newton-le-Willows station and takes the train to Manchester with his festive fuzz in place.

He added: “My favourite one is probably the glitter because it makes my beard look even bigger. It is quite an easy one to do but it gets a big reaction off everybody.

“Actually doing them isn’t too bad and takes anything between 10 and 15 minutes, but the preparation the night before sets you back.

“The longest one was the candles, which took me two hours to prepare for the night before, but in the morning it took literally 10 minutes to pop them in my beard.”
