AN incident of children playing ‘chicken’ on the guided busway has led to a safety review.

Police and Transport for Greater Manchester’s Travelsafe unit is analysing CCTV footage of three youths playing and running on the Cooling Lane section of the busway in Tyldesley on Sunday.

They will consider whether more patrols are needed in the area.

A TfGM spokesman said: "We are aware of this report of school-age children playing on the guided section of the busway.

“Instances of this type of anti-social behaviour are of concern to us and will not be tolerated due to the danger involved.

“The hazards of playing on the guided section are the same as playing on a road or a tram or train track and could result in serious injury or worse.”

As the engines of the Vantage vehicles are hybrid they are quieter than normal buses and therefore it is more difficult to hear them approaching.

Coupled with the high speeds they travel at, the buses pose a serious threat to anyone venturing onto the guided track, says the spokesman.

He added that TfGM has been in touch with more than 2,200 pupils from a dozen schools in the area to make young people aware of the dangers of going onto the guided busway.
