A FESTIVAL celebrating the many different ways residents can get healthier and happier is coming back with a bang.

Wellfest returns next month following the success of last year’s inaugural initiative.

It is doubling in size with two weeks dedicated to encouraging people living in the borough to do something to help their health and wellbeing.

The first week will launch with a range of events from Thursday, June 22.

Returning events include big NHS health checks, the Mass Mile and Dementia Friends.

The first week will end on Sunday, July 2, with the first Joining Jack Bike Ride.

Wellfest will continue linking up with a range of events in the borough through the summer, such as the Leigh Community 10k, the Joining Jack Wigan 10k and National Play Day.

The second Wellfest week will start on Saturday, September 9, with an emphasis on getting young people and children involved in healthy living activities.

Wellfest is organised by public sector, charity and voluntary groups, who have joined forces to encourage people to take up a new fitness challenge, get checked out or discover new ways to make life better through being healthier and more active.

It links into The Deal for Health and Wellness, which was launched by Wigan Council last year with the aim of increasing healthy living and wellbeing across the borough.

Mayor of the Wigan borough Cllr Ron Conway said: “Wellfest is a fantastic opportunity for everyone to try something new that will help with your health and wellbeing.

"This year there is even more for you to try your hand at so make sure you get involved as it is the perfect opportunity to take those first steps towards a healthier and happier you.”
