TWO successful Leythers will have their names set in stone outside Leigh Town Hall in acknowledgement of the dedication and commitment they have shown to the town.

On Monday, June 26, Wigan Council will honour rugby league legend John Woods and leading businessman Richard Waterfield by adding them to the stone stars that will sit in Civic Square for generations.

The council says it has chosen them as the latest stars of Leigh to receive the Hollywood Walk of Fame treatment as they have demonstrated a hard work ethic and loyalty to the town over the years and have established a strong following from residents as a result of their achievements.

Council leader Lord Peter Smith said: “Instilling pride throughout the borough is something Wigan Council strongly believes in and we feel it is our duty to acknowledge those who have done this consistently.

“John and Richard may have led very different careers but they have both been tremendously successful in boosting community spirit, in sports and in business respectively.

"The stars in Civic Square are a symbol of our appreciation and we look forward to the presentation ceremony on June 26.”

John, commonly referred to as Woody by Leigh Centurions fans, scored 2,492 points for the club when he starred for them in the 1970s and 80s and is regarded as being their greatest player of all time.

A 30ft bronze statue of the top points scorer in the club's history was unveiled at their Leigh Sports Village stadium in September to coincide with his 60th birthday.

Richard is widely known for his work managing the family-run Waterfields bakery business.

He has also recently been a member of the Wigan Forward Board, working closely with the council to support economic growth.

Richard has been heavily involved with Bedford High School too, giving children an insight into business management.

The new mayor and mayoress of the Wigan borough, Cllr Bill Clarke and his wife Joan, will attending the unveiling of the permanent tributes.
