MORE than 1,000 people are expected to take part in a colourful parade through the streets on Sunday as the annual Atherton Carnival returns.

The parade from noon will include schools, dance groups and a host of unusual vehicles before everyone heads to Meadowbank playing fields on Gloucester Street to enjoy a feast of entertainment.

There will be a large funfair, pony rides, vehicle displays, a climbing wall, a range of stalls and a mini colour run for parents and children to enjoy.

The carnival will also offer crafts, games, a tombola and face painting.

DJ Kenny will provide music and entertainment and the New Garrett Theatre will put on a special performance.

Music will also be provided by the Tyldesley Brass Band, Anvil Street Drummers, Manchester Poor Band and Manchester Phoenix Pipe Band.

Atherton Carnival committee member Brian Seddon said: "It will be a great day for families without them having to pay an arm and a leg.

“There will be lots for children to do, including a climbing wall and a colour run, and we have firefighters coming along too.

“There will also be more than 50 stalls, appealing to everyone who attends."

Entry to the entertainment in the playing fields after the parade is free.

People taking part in the parade are asked to meet at Meadowbank Primary School and Children’s Centre on Formby Avenue.
