A WORKSHOP has been organised by the Leigh constituency of the Women Against State Pension Inequality (WASPI) due to popular demand.

The session will take place at Joining Community's Lilford House building on St Helens Road on Friday from 10am to noon after its first one last week was well-attended with several letters being submitted to the volunteer group by women on the day.

The first workshop was only arranged on Thursday after the group's monthly meeting.

Women who are interested in attending the workshop on Friday are asked to present their national insurance numbers and bring any correspondence they have from the Department for Working Pensions (DWP) if they have any.

The WASPI campaign aims to convince the Government to make 'fair transitional arrangements' for a group of women who now have to wait up to six more years to receive their state pension.

This follows the Government fast-tracking plans to increase the state pension age (SPA) for women from 60 to 66.

Most people were completely unaware of the move – which could cost women born on or after April 6, 1951, thousands of pounds – as it received little publicity.

The group, who are looking for more volunteers, are also running a weekly session at the vestry at St Mary The Virgin Church, Leigh, every Tuesday from 1pm to 3pm with everyone welcome to attend and learn about the WASPI campaign.

The organisation's next monthly meeting will be held on Friday, September 1 at Holiday Inn Express Leigh Sports Village from 10am to noon.
