AN osteoporosis support group is inviting sufferers to its final meeting of the year.

Ashton, Leigh and Wigan Osteoporosis Support Group, which meets four times a year at Bethel Hindley Green Family Church on Atherton Road, helps people suffering from the condition.

Its free meeting on October 18 will offer a medical update about the brittle bone condition from Christina Heaton, who runs the Bridgewater Community Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust's falls prevention and fracture liaison service.

A raffle and cake stall on the day will raise money for the National Osteoporosis Society.

The support group's treasurer Barbara Lane, who has osteoporosis, said: “The sessions are invaluable because people with the condition can learn so much about it.

“They include information about how people with osteoporosis can still do everyday things they may not have thought they would be able to do.

"New medical developments are happening all the time.

"What we have been told in the sessions have benefitted me and other people at the group.

"Hopefully we can get more sufferers coming to hear the advice."

Barbara added that it is important for older people to have an osteoporosis test after suffering a fracture.

Tea and coffee with biscuits will cost £1 per person at the October meeting.

Parking will be available at the Hindley church.
