A CAR was engulfed by flames in Asda car park this morning, spreading to an adjacent vehicle before fire crews could put it out.

At about 11.35 am, smoke was seen rising from the back of the Asda building on Windermere Road.

As witnesses went to the rear car park to observe, a red Ford Focus quickly "burst into flames".

Luckily, nobody was injured yet the fire did spread to a second car, a black Kia.

Les Walker, a witness to the fire, said: "I was just walking home when I seen smoke rising above the little Asda.

"After a couple of seconds, the car burst into flames and it seemed like the petrol tank had exploded.

"There was a number of small bangs and the petrol that had spilled caused the second car to catch fire."

Fire crews and the police arrived at the scene after around 10 minutes to put the flames out, which is said to have prevented a third car from similarly becoming engulfed.

It is unclear how the fire started as nobody was seen at the scene when witnesses arrived, yet some on social media have said there was an electrical fault with the Focus.
