TWO new big name supermarkets could be built in Leigh.

Plans for Tesco and Morrison's stores are awaiting planning approval with Tesco designated for the former David Brown/Barlo radiator works off Spinning Jenny Way and Morrison's at Leigh Sports Village.

Wigan Council Leader Peter Smith welcomed the news: “The Tesco store is just off the town centre and will improve the look of the area as well as bring in more shoppers into Leigh town centre which will improve the opportunities for other town centre shops.

"I am really pleased that the development will include a cinema which Leigh people have missed for some time and new restaurants that will add to the town’s leisure offer.

"Morrison’s will add to the activities at Leigh Sports Village. As it will increase the footfall on the site, it should improve access by public transport opening up LSV to more people.

"The Leigh Skills Shop on Market Street will offer assistance in recruiting the new staff these stores will need and give job chances for local unemployed people.

"This is great news for Leigh and I believe will help to bring more prosperity.”
