LEIGH Amateur Boxing Club’s Kian Flanagan has been crowned national champion.
The unbeaten 11-year-old battled through to the 34kg England schoolboy minors final in Walkden opposite the unbeaten David Tierney of Guildford City, and in an absorbing bout both boxers showed heart and levels of technique way beyond their years.
Flanagan was awarded a unanimous points’ win.
Two of the club’s other boxers were defeated in national finals.
Josh Waterworth, aged 13, lost a contentious split decision to vastly more experienced Alfie Mehegan of London-based Newham Boxing Club in the 43kg national schoolboy final in Huddersfield.
And Coan Gildart, aged 11, lost for the first time on a split decision against unbeaten Harry Brown of Heart of Portsmouth Boxing Club.
