ASTLEY cycle speedway rider Thomas Whitwam finished off a successful cycle speedway campaign with a runners up medal at Heckmondwicke on Saturday in the Yorkshire Individual Championships.
The 10-year-old was racing in both the under 13s, where he took silver, and under 16s categories. He put in a solid display to finish tied on 16 points with Sheffield rider Sam Haines in the under 13s section.
The pair then took to a run off to determine the second and third positions, with Whitwam leading from the gate.
He held on to take the win and emerge with a second place finish in the under 13s championships behind Sheffield's James Bunting.
It proved a great achievement for Whitwam in a 2014 season that has seen him collect a host of silverware, while enjoying his first year racing in this age group.
Whitwam is now setting his sights on medalling at the British Indoor Championships, which will take place in Coventry next year.
