LADIES captain Helen Smith helped make history at Leigh this week as she guided the side to victory in their first ever competitive match.

Smith carried her bat in an unbeaten knock of 38 while fellow opener Lucy Bullough hit 32 and Georgia Taylor was 21 not out as Leigh set a total of 112-1 from their 20 overs.

Opponents Lymm OP came up 46 runs short as bowler Jess Hargreaves took two scalps and the remaining wickets were shared around.

Their comprehensive victory in the first competitive ladies match to be played at Leigh in 161 years was the perfect start for Karen Brereton’s side to their campaign in Division Three of the Cheshire Women’s League.

The ladies team has been set up by Brereton and Tim McKiernan and is backed up by an established junior section, which includes 10 qualified coaches.
