ADAM Shallcross inspired Leigh into the quarter-finals of Liverpool and District Ray Digman Knockout trophy after a 185-run victory.

His knock of 109 included nine fours and one six from 110 balls repaired the early damage when they were 7-2 after the early losses of Ross Zelem (three) and David Smith (one).

Opener Matthew Hibbert impressed with the bat with 44 and there was also a solid knock by 53 by skipper Matthew McKiernan that helped the hosts to a total of 278 in their 45 overs.

The Beech Walk outfit got off to the perfect start with Richard Dempster striking early to take the wicket of opener William Walker (one) and Mike Barnes (two) soon followed him back to the pavilion.

Ryan Housley also got in on the act of the wicket-taking with Birkenhead reeling at 7-3.

Luke Camden in the middle of the order restored some pride with 49 but hopes of revival were short-lived when Ben Smith trapped the Birkenhead batsman lbw with the score on 85-7.

The home side took the remaining three wickets for the addition of just seven runs.

The wickets were shared out among the bowlers with Dempster (2-9), Housley (1-9), Shallcross (1-11), Smith (2-23), Alex Seddon (1-24), Matthew McKiernan (2-5) and David Smith (1-1) helping to bowl their opponents out in 28.1 overs.

Meanwhile, Leigh wrapped up a successful weekend with a four wicket win against Wallasey.

The decision to bat first paid off for the home side with Greg Beaver spearheading their challenge on his way to 88.

Further down the order Jack Leckey (23), Neil Cross (20) and Christopher Bourne (49) helped as Wallasey were all out for 213 with Dempster (4-58) and McKiernan (4-33) doing most of the damage.

In reply, Ross Zelem reached 44 and further down the order Hedley Molyneux (57), McKiernan (34) and Lewis Bailey (22) saw Leigh home across the finish line for the loss of just six wickets.
