LEIGH travelled to Wilmslow with high hopes following their encouraging performance last week against Birkenhead Park but unfortunately came up short against a much more structured and physically fit, Wilmslow side.

The first half was a very evenly matched affair with both sides cancelling each other out but it was Wilmslow who broke the deadlock, just before half time, when their scrum half, Nick Barker, dummied his way through from 20 metres out to score a try which was well converted by their fly half, Bob MacCallum.

Wilmslow had got a taste of blood now and extended their lead, six minutes into the second half, when they won a scrum against the head and drove over the Leigh line from five metres out for an unconverted try.

Leigh reduced the deficit, on 57 minutes, through an Elliott Ryan penalty but Wilmslow continued to dominate and savage the Leigh defence for the rest of the match.

Their next points came on 70 minutes when their very impressive full back, Ben Day, came into their line and fed a supporting player who cantered over for a converted try to extend their lead to 16 points.

It was Ben Day again who added the final bite from the Wolves, when he crashed over for their bonus point-winning try on 75 minutes.
