Boxing booming in Leigh area

LEIGH Amateur Boxing Club’s 16-year-old Tom Jones took his fifth ABA title when winning the North West Region CYP middleweight title for the second successive year.

Jones met Colm Conway of St John's ABC 24 hours later at the Manchester ABA Centre of Excellence, clinching the title with a clear-cut points victory.

Jones next takes on the Merseyside champion on February 16 in Liverpool.

It was tough luck on Leigh ABC'S 16-year-old Jonny Brown, losing out to a narrow points defeat in his bantamweight final.

Amateur boxing in the Leigh area is currently booming.

That was proved as four clubs were all well represented in the earlier rounds of the Schoolboy and CYP boxing championships in Manchester.

There were some notable performances and some title victories to highlight the quality of the fighters on show.

Boxers from Pool of Life in Atherton, Centurions in Tyldesley, Astley VIP in Astley competed along with Leigh Amateur Boxing Club.

Most notable performances were from Jack Lloyd (Pool of Life), who had to box three times, and Jones (Leigh) and Andrew Fleming (Astley VIP) who both had to win twice, to capture their North West titles.

Jones and Fleming were also involved in the local derbies, with Jones defeating Astley VIP's Swift in a tremendous semi final at 75kgs, while Fleming returned the favour in his final by defeating Leigh's more experienced Johnny Brown at 54kgs.

Leigh also had two further winners in Sean Connor and Adam Ridge, who move forward to the National Quarter Finals of the Schoolboy Championships, and with Michael Connor receiving a walkover through the North West area as there were no other entries at his weight, they will be well represented as the competition continues.

A mention should also go to William Rawson from Pool of Life, and Danny Eckersley and David Morris from Astley VIP, who won their semi finals only to come up short in the final, and the Centurions trio of Daniel Murray, Brad McColl and Kieran Barlow who all battled hard in difficult contests.

Some really good performances from the local boxers over the last couple of weekends. Enjoyed watching Jack Lloyd who seemed to grow in confidence with every contest and Tom Jones must have a really good chance of capturing a National title after his displays so far. Good luck to all the boxers in the next round of competition. Lets hope they can all continue to progress and put Leigh and the surrounding areas on the boxing map!
