ADRIAN Lam sees no reason why Leigh’s milestone making Super League campaign can’t be translated into Betfred Challenge Cup success.

The Leopards’ 30-4 victory at Huddersfield last Friday was a record extending fourth in a row, ensured the club’s best seasonal total of seven top flight wins and completed a first ever success over the Giants at the John Smith’s Stadium.

Leigh take their red-hot form into tomorrow’s sixth round cup tie (last 16) at Wakefield; a team they whitewashed 32-0 in the league on April 16.

And while the Leopards sit fifth in the Super League table, Mark Applegarth’s Trinity remain rock bottom after 12 successive defeats.

Leigh, winners of the 1895 AB Sundecks Cup last season, haven’t lifted the Challenge Cup since 1971, having won it for the first time fifty years earlier.

They were knocked out 24-18 by Hull KR in the fifth-round last season but are 18-1 with the title sponsors to become Wembley champions for a third time.

“It (the competition) is something we are very passionate about at Leigh,” said Lam, a competition winner with Wigan in 2002.

“We have talked to the group how important it has been as part of our history. It is one of those opportunities where we can start fresh, park Super League for a week and go all out for this competition.

“Anyone can win so it is best foot forward. We will give it every respect and we will do that by playing well.”

Lam doesn’t expect too many changes to his 17-man squad though Ben Nakubuwai has been ruled out through injury.

Despite Wakefield’s dreadful form Lam offers note of caution about the trip to Belle Vue.

“They are a different team now to what they were a month ago,” he said. “They have played a different style in the last couple of weeks and went pretty close at Warrington.”

The Final this year returns to Wembley on Saturday August 12 and will be preceded for the first time by the Betfred Women’s Challenge Cup Final.

Love Island star Keanan Brand returned to the day job last weekend, making his first appearance of 2023.

Brand has joined Barrow on a month’s loan but couldn’t prevent the Cumbrians’ slipping to defeat at London Broncos.

Another Leigh loanee, Umyla Hanley, took his tally of tries to four in two games with one of Rochdale Hornets’ five touchdowns in a 28-24 victory at London Skolars.
