LEIGH Leopards match winner Lachlan Lam revealed that his Golden Point drop goal was his first ever as a professional.
The Lance Todd Trophy winner slotted the killer goal three minutes into extra time to clinch Leigh’s first Challenge Cup since 1971.
It sparked scenes of jubilation on and off the pitch and came after Hull KR had sent the game into extra time with a late converted try.
Gareth O’Brien missed one and Brad Schneider launched a poor effort from half way.
And then after a strong run from Rob Mulhern, O’Brien switched play for Lam to put his name in folklore.
Lachlan Lam said: “We have done a lot of work this past month because we are coming to the time of year that you want to be playing in.
“We have done a lot of practice on that and Gaz (O’Brien) has been our guy.
“He does not miss many – he missed the first one but then had the trust to throw it back to me to take that kick.
“That just comes down to mate-ship off the field and the kind of people we want to have around our team.”
He was not immediately sure that he had nailed it admitting that he dropped it a bit on the angle but then said half way through he knew it was going in.
“It happened really quick – I went to celebrate and all of a sudden I was on my back.
“It was a special moment and was my first professional field goal – and had never kicked one apart from in reserve grade in Australia,” Lam said.
