GARETH O’Brien has played down Leigh’s chances of more honours this season.

After Challenge Cup glory the Leopards are on course for a second successive triple crown after last season lifting the 1895 Cup victory, winning the Championship League Leaders’ Shield and Play-Off final.

The Wembley heroes return to Super League action against Catalans Dragons on Saturday, four points behind the French table toppers and starting the latest round in third place.

“As far as the treble’s concerned, we’re not looking too far ahead,” insisted the experienced full-back.

“We’ll just enjoy this moment. We deserve it because we have worked hard. We will turn our attention to the league once we’ve partied.

“But it is a competition we have put ourselves into a good position to do well at.”

O’Brien missed a chance to kick the winning golden point drop goal but didn’t need to kick himself for too long.

“I struck it well,” he said of his extra time effort. “I’d been practicing them all week.

“It just drifted wide so I was kicking myself a little to give them seven tackles. Thankfully, the boys defended well.

“I had a second attempt after Brad Schneider missed but the pass was a little behind me.

“I reckoned Matt Parcell at marker would have probably got to me if I’d tried.

“Obviously, we’d rehearsed with Lockie to be in that position in case it happened and clutch moments he’s nailed it.

“I was the first one to reach him. There was a big pile on and I must have said ‘I love you!’ about a million times.

“I am just so happy. I can’t put it into words.”

A Wembley runner-up with Castleford two years earlier, O’Brien added: “Sport is full of ups and downs.

“I’ve been in Million Pound Games on the right end and wrong end of them. Challenge Cup finals on the right and wrong end of them, too.

“It’s just sport. It’s a rollercoaster but the friendships you make and brothers makes it all worthwhile.”
