ON the subject of feeding pigeons, a pensioner friend of mine mistakenly fed the pigeons in Leigh Town Hall square last Monday, with just one piece of crumpet.

As she is mostly confined to her home and rarely gets out and doesn’t receive the Leigh Journal, she had no idea that she was doing anything wrong.

The warning notices are small and high up and as she has poor eyesight and was alone and in a mobility scooter, she didn’t see them. Almost immediately, an official (who apparently looked like a bouncer) rushed towards her and issued her with a fixed penalty notice. He had been watching her on CCTV.

She was totally shocked.

She has paid her fine but the whole incident has left her traumatised.

I think in this particular case, common sense should have prevailed and a warning would have been sufficient.
