I AM compelled to write in response to A Jones’ provocative letter about his busway misconceptions.

He makes the point that the new junctions where one bus every four minutes will cross the four busy vital main roads will “slightly decrease commute times due to improved junctions for car drivers”. I find this statement as with the rest of his letter invalid.

The improved junctions he writes about didn’t exist before, and so how will running a “prioritised” bus way across them decrease journey times for cars?

There is a fundamental flaw in the concept of reality.

Remember that the lights will always be set for the buses to cross “our” roads. Hence the name “bus priority”, while cars sit jammed up nose to tail.

Once the busway is put into service it will cause more vehicular congestion, longer travelling times, avoidable carbon dioxide pollution, frustration and chaos for many years to come.

The only good news is that A Jones says he cycles down the East Lancs gasping in all that carbon pollution. He then goes on to say he doesn’t mind the pain of waiting for the busway to be completed, so then, he can go by bus leaving more space on the roads for my car. I rest my case.
