AFTER numerous emails, telephone calls and letters to the highways department with no reply, I am hoping you will publish this letter regarding the traffic situation in Orchard Lane.

Between 3.30pm and 6pm the lane is very heavily congested by a cut through from Hope Street and Charles Street.

The emergency ambulance station is situated in Orchard Lane and when an emergency occurs traffic has to mount the pavements, to the detriment of pedestrians.

During the day half of the lane is used as a car park for hospital staff, while the other half is used by patrons of a beauty salon situated in Leigh Road.

I have asked for the situation to be monitored with a view to the lane being for either permit holders only or one-way traffic, but to no avail.

I must stress that Orchard Lane is what it says it is – a lane, not a road, street or avenue.

Something needs to be done and quickly as over Christmas there were two accidents and the way things are there will be more.

C O’Neill, Leigh
