WE were delighted when Cineworld opened in Leigh and we have enjoyed many films there, as well as some astonishing live performances.

But recently we have had to take issue with the choice of films available.

There seems to be a bias towards films which cater to the under 25s and which are pure entertainment value, rather than thought-provoking.

This has meant that although we have a cinema within walking distance, we have to travel to Manchester or Bolton to see certain films of our choice.

A recent example was the Helen Mirren film Eye in the Sky, which we saw in Bolton.

However we recently spotted that the Michael Moore film Where to Invade Next was on the Cineworld website as showing at 5.40pm in Leigh, so we duly arrived at the theatre expecting to see the film.

It was not showing that night.

Further enquiries told us that it was not planned for Leigh at any time.

However no-one could explain why the film remained on the website, with details of times and dates, but would never be shown in Leigh.

We noticed that most films showing during the day are for under 25 audiences, who are usually at work or school.

We would like to suggest that there might be a daytime audience – students with variable timetables, shift workers, over 65s who are not yet senile, as everyone seems to assume – which would appreciate the less mainstream films and who would provide a new customer ‘footprint’.

We thought the whole point of having multi-screen cinemas was to provide for all tastes.
